Position Summary

GR Mitchell has a long history supporting general contractors, builders, remodelers, and homeowners by supplying the building materials they need to get the job done. We are a privately held, mid-market building materials supplier with a long history of doing right by our customers, vendors, and team members. We are seeking a high-integrity, results-driven Controller to lead and own the financial operations of the business. Reporting directly to the President, this leader will serve as a key strategic partner while maintaining disciplined control over financial management, reporting, forecasting, risk, and compliance.

This role requires both strong technical expertise and outstanding character. Trust, discretion, and alignment with company values are non-negotiable.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy

  • Serve as a strategic business partner to the President and leadership team.
  • Assist with financial strategy, forecasting, and long-term planning.
  • Develop and manage the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts.
  • Provide clear, actionable financial insights and recommendations to support decision-making.

Accounting, Reporting & Analysis

  • Provide complete oversight and management of all accounting and financial operations.
  • Ensure accurate and timely month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closes.
  • Deliver reliable financial statements, management reports, and KPI dashboards.
  • Drive profitability analysis by division, product line, and customer segment.
  • Identify cost-saving opportunities and margin-improvement initiatives across the business.

Cash Management, Risk & Compliance

  • Oversee daily cash management and liquidity planning.
  • Assist with capital planning and help manage banking relationships.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and audit requirements.
  • Coordinate with external CPA firms, lenders, and legal counsel as needed.
  • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve internal controls and risk management systems.
  • Oversee customer credit policies, including reviewing and approving credit for new and existing accounts.

Team Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Lead, mentor, and develop accounting and finance team members.
  • Implement and refine financial systems, processes, and reporting infrastructure.
  • Collaborate with payroll/HR resources to ensure accurate payroll accounting, benefits reconciliation, and compliance.
  • Support M&A activity, financing efforts, and expansion initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field (CPA or MBA strongly preferred).
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, including prior Controller or senior accounting leadership roles.
  • Experience overseeing finances in a company with $50M+ in annual revenue.
  • Demonstrated ability to build, upgrade, and optimize financial systems and reporting infrastructure.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, financial modeling, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Proven experience managing audits and banking relationships.
  • High proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and advanced Excel skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Reputation for integrity, sound judgment, and maintaining confidentiality.
